This is to announce a fundraising event organized by AuSLMAT to support Valaichchenai Base hospital. This event will take place in Wantirna (suburb of Melbourne), in Australia, on Friday 26th of October 2012, from 7.30PM onwards.

VALAICHCHENAI BASE HOSPITAL is a small busy peripheral hospital situated about an hour’s drive away from the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital. Its Out Patient Department sees around 450-500 patients a day whilst its Emergency Treatment Unit has approximately 30-50 patients a day. The hospital has about 100 in-patients located in Medical, Paediatric and Obstetric units. Out-Patients clinics are held for Hypertension, Epilepsy, Asthma, Diabetes and Paediatrics. Five to Fifteen patients need transfer to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital each day.
Bertram Ekenaike, David Cruse, Chris Drieberg and I felt that we should assist this base hospital which struggles to cope with the population that it serves.
Dr. Pradeeep Cooray is a medical officer at the hospital. He has sent us a list of medical equipment needed by the hospital. We have had donations from the Peter Mac and Alfred Hospital and MIA radiology will provide us with additional equipment including an ultrasound scanner, patient trolleys etc. These donations will be sent directly to the base hospital in a container in November.
