Dilu’s Homestay

Meet your host family !

Dilu is the only child of the family, born in 2003. She is a brilliant student and has entered university in Colombo in May 2024. Might look shy at first sight, but will definitely warm up if guests propose to play cards after dinner…

Jothy, her mother, is a housewife, looking with much care after her guests, maintaining a high standard of hygiene in the homestay, while cooking delicious meals adapted to the guests’ needs. She loves helping others and gardening.

Rusi, her husband, works in the construction field as a contractor, as well as a skilled painter,
electrician and plumber. In his free time, he loves singing, acting and is an active member of local football clubs.

The family started welcoming guests in 2016.

A Cultural Experience

As we usually explain to guests and travel agents, we do not sell rooms, but experiences in families.
Therefore, sharing time with the host family is the main objective of us promoting accommodation in homestays, so guests can get to know the culture, lifestyle of real Sri Lankan people in their living places…

The whole family loves hosting guests in their cute home and exchange with them about local culture and lifestyle. It is a joyful family to interact with at dinner time, after which discussion, games and songs are common.

The majority of Batticaloa inhabitants are Hindus, Since there are many Hindu temples around Batticaloa, there is a good chance that a festival might be held in one of them during the guests stay. This can be an ideal time for guests to discover this vibrant faith and immerse into the Hindu spirituality, accompanied by their host family.

Practical Information

Location of the Homestay

Dilu’s Homestay is situated in the heart of the village of Thiruchentoor, Kallady. It is only at 10mn walk from Kallady beach and 2 km from Batticaloa town. It is close to the public school and preschool, which makes it an interesting place to observe the village lifestyle.

Space and Facilities

Two houses share the same compound, with a yard and flowered garden.

The family lives and cooks in the older house.

3 Rooms for Guests

The second house consists of 3 bedrooms, which can accommodate up to 8 people.

Up to 4 people can stay on the first floor in the Peacock studio.

Up to 4 people can stay on the ground floor in the connecting Elephant and Squirrel rooms.

Peacock Studio

Upstairs, the peacock studio is a spacious room with a queen size bed (6.5 ft x 5 ft) and a single bed, used as a sofa when guests request a double room. All beds have mosquito nets.

The sofa transforms into 1 or 2 single beds (6.5 ft x 3 ft), to accommodate up to 4 people. In this case, the small table will be removed.

This room configuration is ideal for a couple with 2 small children needing close supervision from parents.

The studio has A/C (you can choose to book with or without A/C) and an attached bathroom with hot water.

It also has a balcony on the front side, with view on many trees and flowers, the lane and the nearby school.

Elephant & Squirrel rooms

Downstairs, 2 interconnecting rooms named “Elephant room” and “Squirrel room” share a common bathroom attached to the Elephant room.

They are equipped with mosquito nets and ceiling fans, there is no A/C in these rooms.

Ideal for a couple with 1 or 2 older children, who prefer to have more privacy than in a family room.

The Elephant room has a queen size bed (6.5 ft x 5 ft), an attached bathroom without hot water.

No space is available to add an extra bed.

The Squirrel room is a twin room as it has 2 single beds (6.5 ft x 3 ft), which can be joined to form a large double bed on request.

It can be booked together with the Elephant room when guests are 3 or 4, or if 2 guests need to have 2 separate beds.

The squirrel room can not be booked alone as the bathroom is
attached to the elephant room, so the elephant room has to be crossed to reach the bathroom.

Meals

We always propose our homestays on half-board basis only, as the dinner time is the ideal time to exchange between guests and hosts.

Meals are generally taken in the flowered yard, unless the weather prevents it. In that case, on rainy days, the meals will be taken in the family’s dining hall.

The food cooked here reflects the traditional food of Batticaloa people, generally rice or pittu, stringhoppers, uppuma, dosai, idly, etc. accompanied by curries cooked the local way but with the level of chilly preferred by the guests (non spicy, middle spicy, spicy, spicy hot).

Families with kids having issues to eat Sri Lankan food can explain the food requirements of their children.

The food served at breakfast will be discussed after the dinner (tea, coffee or milk, fruits, Sri Lankan food or bread with eggs, jam)

The water served is filtered and chlorinated. Guests can refill their bottles at the homestay to avoid plastic waste.

Gourmet or Budget…?

BUDGET Formula

There are 2 formulas for the food, called “budget formula” and “gourmet formula” with different rates.

When booking the accommodation, you will be asked to choose between these 2 formulas and to indicate your choice on your booking request.

The gourmet formula comprises
gourmet meals (more curries,
1 seafood or meat curry, more fruits for dessert at dinner and more fruits at breakfast)

The budget formula’s dinner will
generally be served with fish and
vegetables curries.

GOURMET Formula

This is what guests have said about their stay…
